1. If you are having an endoscopy (Gastroscopy) only, you will need to fast for 8 hours prior, but clear fluids (water, apple juice, cordial, soft drinks) can be consumed up to 4 hours prior.
2. If you are having a colonoscopy, you will need to fast for 4 hours prior to the procedure. You will be on a clear fluid diet from the day before the procedure.
You will be observed by the recovery nurse after your procedure for about 1.5 hours before discharge.
Dr Khaing or Dr Lin will speak with you once you are fully awake to discuss the results and you have be provided with the procedure report.
You are not permitted to do the following activities for 24 hours after your procedure:
- Do not drive, ride a bike, or operating any other vehicle (e.g. scooter)
- Do not make any important decisions or sign legal documents
- Do no drink alcohol, or any recreational substances

For medical emergencies, please present to Greenslopes private hospital (if privately insured), or nearest public hospital emergency.
For most patients, they will be in the hospital for 4 hours.
Patient are required to present to hospital an hour prior to their procedure, and usually are ready to be discharged after 4 hours.
Patient having an endoscopy or colonoscopy are required to avoid driving for 24 hours after their procedure due to the effect of the anaesthesia/sedation medication.
Patient are required to have a family member or responsible adult to pick them up from the hospital after the procedure and to stay with the patient overnight.
Most patients are able to be seen within 2 weeks for a consultation.
Most procedures can be scheduled within 2 weeks, and are performed Monday, Tuesday and Friday.
Dr Khaing and Dr Lin will discuss the results with in the patient on the same day once the patient is fully awake. Patient will receive a procedure report on the same day.
Most procedures are done at Greenslopes Private Hospital. Please present to the front reception an hour prior to the procedure..
The bowel preparation instructions will be provided to the patient either during the consultation or emailed to the patient. Dr Lin or Dr Khaing will discuss the bowel preparation plan with the patient to ensure they understand the instructions.
The medication can be purchased from any chemist without a script.
Yes, you will require a current referral from your doctor.
A Referral from your general practitioner is valid for 12 months, is required for us to claim the medicare rebate for you.
Yes, Direct access endoscopy/colonoscopy is available, meaning you can have a procedure without a prior consultation with our gastroenterologists, hence saving on the cost of the initial consultation.
You can request for open access endoscopy/colonoscopy if you meet the following guidelines:
- Under 75
- BMI less than 35
- Not taking anticoagulation medications (e.g. warfarin, clopidogrel)
- No significant anticipated procedure risks (e.g. No severe medical conditions, such as Heart failure, severe respiratory disease e.g. asthma, copd, sleep apnea).
- We will assess the suitability for Direct access based on the referral letter. We recommend open access endoscopy as an option for patients with low complexity issues that do not require a detailed discussion in clinic.
